New Cougar Signs Installed

See these new signs along Cougar Creek, at Barrier Information Centre, or at the Canmore Nordic Centre.

Alberta Parks, Alberta Fish & Wildlife, and WildSmart have made an excellent effort to increase Cougar awareness in the Bow Valley by installing these large (4′ x 4′) panels specifically targeting issues around Living and Recreating in Cougar Country and what to do if you encounter a Cougar.

Well laid out with almost life-sized images, they remind us that these large cats are always present on the landscape even if there have been no sightings or incidences for a long time. (*NOTE*: follow this link to read about a recent Cougar encounter in Canmore: www.rmoutlook.com/article/20150130/RMO0801/150139999/-1/rmo/cougar-charges-at-canmore-man)

The first three locations are: Canmore Nordic Centre, Cougar Creek trail, and the Barrier Information Centre on Highway 40. If you pass them while walking on trails in these areas, be sure to stop and read them thoroughly. Same sized Bear Awareness panels are being prepared for the back and should be installed by the summer. Hopefully more will be installed in the upcoming year at other popular areas.

Keep yourself safe by travelling in groups, making noise, and watching for signs of wildlife! Carry bear spray, a walking stick, and a noise maker to defend yourself in the case of chance encounters. Keep your pet safe by keeping it on a leash and close to your group.

Cougars can be encountered anywhere, any time of the year.
