Elk Update:

Elk Illness in Canmore

Over the past week 2 male elk became very ill in the Town of Canmore.  At first wildlife officials thought it might be something someone sprayed and had accidentally poisoned the animals after they ingested it.  One of the elk died over the weekend and the other began frequenting the area of Blackrock Crescent to avoid predators.  The elk will be studied to determine the cause of the illness but at this time it is believed to be accidental poisoning from something like anti-freeze.  There was a car accident last week and anti-freeze may have leaked and exposed the elk to vegetation soaked in the sweet tasting toxin.  Both elk presented with symptoms quickly and began to deteriorate.

The good news: Elk to recover with our help

The other male elk frequenting the town site is now expected to recover.  Wildlife officials believe this elk is trying to avoid predators as it had been circled by coyotes on the weekend.  The elk is likely to continue to stay close to town and may choose your backyard to recover.  He needs a lot of rest and space to do this.  We would greatly appreciate if everyone can be tolerant of his presence in town as he recovers from an illness that nearly killed him.  Please continue to walk your dogs on leash and give this animal the space he needs to survive.  He was last seen in the Benchlands area.    Please let neighbors know and spread the word by mouth, twitter or facebook.

Fish and Wildlife Officers and WildSmart would like to thank the public and the media for getting the word out that these animals were sick and keeping an eye out for an unknown cause for their illness.  We are so fortunate to live with these animals and to have a community that cares so much for them.
