Dec.5 WildSmart Speaker Series – ‘The Rules we Make that Coyotes Break’

WildSmart Dec.5 poster
Join University of Calgary Professor Shelley M. Alexander, Ph.D. at our next Speaker Series event The Rules we Make that Coyotes Break: Understanding human experience of wildlife co-existence, at the Canmore Collegiate High School Theatre on Wednesday, December 5 at 7 pm.

Abstract: If we could just educate enough people about the importance of carnivores, maybe our species could co-exist peacefully? Unfortunately, education alone often fails to change human behaviour. People who support co-existence can have very different ideas about what it should look like in practice, and many people question whether they should have to co-exist at all. Consequently, carnivore ecologists around the world argue that successful conservation of wildlife depends on improved understanding of humans, not animals. This talk will explore connections between human experiences, beliefs and behaviours towards carnivores, focusing specifically on human-coyote entanglements in the Foothills Parklands, east of Canmore. When it comes to co-existence, some people can change, some never will – knowing what information is needed by whom, and the constraints on mobilizing that knowledge can help citizens, educators, and managers better focus their conservation efforts.

This is a free event, however donations towards the WildSmart program are very much appreciated.

We hope to see you there!

Special thanks goes out to our event sponsors, Lafarge Canada and the Rotary Club of Canmore for their generous support of our speaker series!

    Hi Annette,
At this time, we have no plans to have this lecture shown in Calgary but there is always a possibility that it may happen in the future. I am hoping to record the audio of this talk this week and will hopefully post it on our YouTube page in the future.

    Have a great day!
    cheers Nick
