Care for bears? Help keep them in the valley by creating a WildSmart Garden

Help keep bears on the landscape by planting non-fruit bearing shrubs and trees this fall.

Alpine Precision planting a Double Flowering Plum shrub outside Elevation Place.  A great plant that has amazing pink flowers but bears no fruit in the fall.

Our community loves fruit trees.  They have great flowers and amazing colors in the fall.  They are also a major cause of human-bear conflicts in the Bow Valley.  Bears love fruit and learn to frequent neighborhoods in search of this food source.  This leads to property damage, conflicts with people and access to other foods that encourage bears to spend more time in our yards instead of the wild.  As a result, many bears over the years have been relocated as a public safety issue.  Some bears do not survive relocation and it adds to the numbers of bears we lose each year already by collisions with trains and cars.

You can help keep bears wild and in the valley by either removing fruit each fall or by choosing similar trees and shrubs that have great flowers and fall colors but do not bear fruit.  Our wonderful green thumb volunteers and local biologists have been working closely with garden centers to create an amazing list of alternatives for you that want a WildSmart garden.
