Bear Activity Trends

Bear activity in the Bow Valley has really tapered off. There were no reports of either grizzly bears or black bears this past week. Some of the collared grizzly bears appear to have denned up already. While some bears have denned up, there will still be some bears still out and it is not uncommon for some to still be out into the latter part of November.  It also continues to be hunting season in some parts of the Bow Valley and there may be the remains of succcessfully killed animals in the forested areas around Canmore and the Hamlets within the MD of Bighorn.  These remains will continue to be a big attraction for any bears that come across them. Always remember to carry bear spray, even while walking on the trails in Town. Make noise and let bears know you are coming. Maps indicating the zone locations referenced in these bear summary reports can be viewed via the following link:

We are interested in your feedback related to these weekly summaries . If you have comments please let us know – only helps to make the information of greater value.

Be aware of your surroundings, know how to reduce the likelihood of encounters, and be prepared should an encounter take place. Always use caution by paying attention to signs of bear activity such as scats, tracks, and digging. Make lots of noise while hiking; hike in groups when possible; carry bear spray; and obey warnings and closures.

The above summary is based upon a compilation of bear information provided by government agencies and unconfirmed sightings reported by the public over the last week. It is not intended to be used as a real time, complete record of where bears are in the valley.

Important Note:

Please do not use the comment box to report sightings of wildlife.
