Bear Activity: November 4 to November 10

(Banff National Park East Gate to Bow Valley Provincial Park)

For the Period: November 4 to November 10, 2016

Welcome to the last weekly bear report of 2016.

*Feedback Wanted*

Please take a moment to complete this short survey. It’s 8 questions (3 minutes) and it will help us determine what form the bear report will take next year. Your feedback is very helpful.

The WildSmart Facebook page will continue its updates on Bow Valley wildlife throughout the winter. We look forward to starting the weekly bear reports again in the spring of 2017!

Another quiet week for Bow Valley bears. While the bears are still awake they are spending their time preparing their dens and slowly moving into quieter parts of the forests and mountains. You may still encounter bears while recreating so please continue to be vigilant and carry bear spray when out on the trails this winter. Bear spray is also effective against non-hibernating wildlife such as cougars, wolves and coyotes.

Current Bow Valley Closures and Warnings

*there are no warning or closures in the Bow Valley at this time

Additional bear warnings and closures available here for anyone visiting Kananaskis Country and Alberta Parks.

For more information on areas in the Bow Valley frequented by bears at this time of year visit our human-bear conflict summary map.

The information above is based upon a compilation of bear information provided by government agencies and unconfirmed sightings reported by the public over the last week. It is not intended to be used as a real time, complete record of where bears are in the valley.

And Now some Paws-itive News

While we’re wrapping up the bear reports, there are still plenty of animals awake and active throughout the winter. Our second speaker series event this fall will be about one of these animals. Join us on November 24th, 7pm, at the Canmore Collegiate High School where Jesse Whittington, a Banff National Park ecologist, will be talking about the fascinating ways that wolves shape the ecology of Banff National Park and the Canadian Rockies.
