Bear Activity Trends

Buffalberry season is here – some areas in the Bow Valley now have ripe red/ orange berries. This will bring bears down into the valley bottom to feed, so be aware of bears feeding trailside or in other areas where bufflaberry grows. Black bears were reported in the Harvie Heights West, Canmore Nordic Centre, Quarry/ Grassi Lake, TSR Resort, Alpine Club, Gap Hill, Bow Flats, Yamnuska and Wind Valley. Grizzly bear activity was reported at Harvie Heights West, Silvertip, TSR Resort and Heart Creek this week . Always remember to carry bear spray, even while walking on the trails in Town. Make noise and let bears know you are coming. The elk closure on Larch Island in Canmore is still in effect: Maps indicating the zone locations referenced in these bear summary reports can be viewed via the following link:

We are interested in your feedback related to these weekly summaries . If you have comments please let us know – only helps to make the information of greater value.

Be aware of your surroundings, know how to reduce the likelihood of encounters, and be prepared should an encounter take place. Always use caution by paying attention to signs of bear activity such as scats, tracks, and digging. Make lots of noise while hiking; hike in groups when possible; carry bear spray; and obey warnings and closures.

The above summary is based upon a compilation of bear information provided by government agencies and unconfirmed sightings reported by the public over the last week. It is not intended to be used as a real time, complete record of where bears are in the valley.

Important Note:

Please do not use the comment box to report sightings of wildlife.
