BEAR SUMMARY FOR THE BOW VALLEY
(Banff National Park East Gate to Bow Valley Provincial Park)

For the Period: June 24 to June 30, 2016

Welcome to the ongoing weekly bear reports for 2016.

This year, thanks to your feedback, we’re trying a slightly different format. As always we love to hear from our readers. Please let us know if you have any comments or concerns.

Summary

Happy Canada Day! Berry season has arrived a bit early this year and bears have been spotted in the valley feeding on ripe buffaloberry – Shepherdia Canadensis. The ongoing bear warning at the Nordic Center and the Grassi Lakes area is the result of multiple reports of both black bears and grizzlies snacking on berries on the side of trails.

Human - Bear conflict map for berry season: these maps are based upon a compilation of bear and wildlife information provided by government agencies and unconfirmed sightings reported by the public each week. They are not intended to be used as a real time, complete record of where bears are in the valley.

Bears have also been seen in other areas of the valley including Middle Lake, Three Sisters Creek, the power plant down by the Bow River, Stewart Creek Golf Course and on several of the highways in the Bow Valley. This Canada Day weekend don’t get caught bear-handed – make sure you have your bear spray with you while hiking and biking!

In other news another grizzly bear was killed last Saturday (June 25th). The adult male grizzly was struck by a train on the tracks in Canmore.

Current Closures and Warnings

-There is a ongoing bear warning for the Canmore Nordic Centre and Grassi lakes Day Use Area as multiple black and grizzly bears have been seen feeding on berries next to trails.

-The elk closure in the Benchlands is still in effect.

For more information on areas in the Bow Valley frequented by bears at this time of year visit our human-bear conflict summary map.

And Now some Paws-itive News

Just a reminder to not feed Yogi, Boo Boo and their cousins this Canada Day! Make sure you don’t leave your pic-a-nic baskets unattended, be sure to scrub the grill and clean the grease tray on your barbecues when you’re done grilling, and place garbage and empty drink bottles/cans in bear proof containers! Have a fun, bear smart holiday!

Please remember BEARS CAN BE ENCOUNTERED ANYWHERE, ANYTIME!

Be aware of your surroundings, know how to reduce the likelihood of encounters and be prepared should an encounter take place. Always use caution by paying attention to signs of bear activity such as scats, tracks, and digging. Make lots of noise while hiking; hike in groups when possible; carry bear spray; know how to use it; and obey warnings and closures.
