Bear Activity: July 31 to August6, 2015

BEAR SUMMARY FOR THE BOW VALLEY
(Banff National Park to Bow Valley Provincial Park)

For the Period:  July 31 to August 6, 2015

Welcome to the ongoing weekly bear reports for 2015.

Bear Activity Trends

There was no reported bear activity in the Town of Canmore this week. Many of the radio collard grizzly bears in K – Ctry are up high in the alpine – possibly a reflection of the relatively sporadic buffaloberry crop. Black bears were reported at the Canmore Nordic Centre, Deadmans Flats, Heart Creek, YMCA, Yamnuska and Bow Valley Prov Park. There was a grizzly bear reportedly hit by a train E of Exshaw but it could not be located nor was it confirmed to be a grizzly bear. Always remember to carry bear spray, even while walking on the trails in Town. Make noise and let wildlife know you are coming. Maps indicating the zone locations referenced in these bear summary reports can be viewed via the following link:  www.wildsmart.ca/news/zones-reference-maps/.

We are interested in your feedback related to these weekly summaries . If you have comments please let us know – it only helps to make the information of greater value.

BEARS CAN BE ENCOUNTERED ANYWHERE, ANYTIME!

Be aware of your surroundings, know how to reduce the likelihood of encounters, and be prepared should an encounter take place. Always use caution by paying attention to signs of bear activity such as scats, tracks, and digging. Make lots of noise while hiking; hike in groups when possible; carry bear spray; and obey warnings and closures.

The above summary is based upon a compilation of bear information provided by government agencies and unconfirmed sightings reported by the public over the last week. It is not intended to be used as a real time, complete record of where bears are in the valley.

Important Note:

Please do not use the comment box to report sightings of wildlife.
