An Area Closure was issued today for the south side of the valley (see map below) due to numerous bears in the area feeding on berries. This Closure is a preventative measure to prevent negative conflicts between bears and people.

A warning has been issued for the Canmore Nordic Centre (see map below) due to numerous bears in the area feeding on berries.

Bears when feeding may not be as aware of people. When bears are surprised they can respond defensively as they may feel threatened. When heading outdoors to recreate, please remember to: Make lots of noise, carry bear spray and know how to use it, travel in groups, keep dogs on leash, and RESPECT WARNINGS AND CLOSURES!!!

The information above is based upon a compilation of bear information provided by government agencies and unconfirmed sightings reported by the public over the last week. It is not intended to be used as a real time, complete record of where bears are in the valley.

And Now some Paws-itive News

A big thank you to the amazing volunteers who came out to the Legacy Trail on Monday morning to help prune back Buffaloberry between the highway and the trail near the Banff National Park East Gate. Buffaloberries grow in abundance all over the Bow Valley and surrounding areas. Please check out this short video of Jay Honeyman, Human-Wildlife Conflict Biologist with Alberta Environment and Parks, explaining the reasons why pruning these berries is a positive thing. Removing this food source from high human use areas makes the bears move on and eat berries in safer and quieter spots with less human interruptions.

We would also like to encourage people to remove berries and fruit from their yards as these can attract bears into the community, putting people and bears at risk.
