BEAR SUMMARY FOR THE BOW VALLEY
(Banff National Park to Bow Valley Provincial Park)

For the Period: April 29 to May 5, 2011

The following summary is based upon a compilation of bear information provided by government agencies and unconfirmed sightings reported by the public over the last week. It is not intended to be used as a real time, complete record of where bears are in the valley.

BEARS CAN BE ENCOUNTERED ANYWHERE, ANYTIME!

Be aware of your surroundings, know how to reduce the likelihood of encounters, and be prepared should an encounter take place. Always use caution by paying attention to signs of bear activity such as scats, tracks, and digging. Make lots of noise while hiking; hike in groups when possible; carry pepper spray; and obey closures.

Education Tidbit

Bears are slowly coming out of their winter dens. We are seeing more and more evidence of bear activity, primarily tracks in the snow, as winter gradually switches over to spring. It is usually the adult males who first appear in the spring and that was confirmed by a number of sightings of large males back in early April just west of Banff and in the Highwood area of Kananaskis Country. Females with cubs are usually the last to emerge from their dens sometime in mid to late May.

 Bear Activity Trends

There has been grizzly activity Quarry Lake Zone this week. There have been no reports yet of black bears in the valley.

Important Notes

Please respect closure and warning signage. These are posted for the safety of the public and wildlife. Closures do not typically last for very long – please be patient – the area will reopen once the safety concern is gone.
