Reports of bears in the Bow Valley seem to be on the increase. This past week black bears were reported in the Canmore Nordic Centre, Georgetown, Alpine Club, Lac des Arc, and Harvie Heights/Benchlands. There are several brown coloured black bears in the valley that are regularly being reported as grizzly bears. Multiple sightings of a single grizzly bear were reported in the TSR South Zone near the Stewart Ck golf course, TSR Resort, Grassi Corridor, Bow des Arc, Alpine Club, Silvertip, Harvie Heights/Benchlands, and Canmore Nordic Centre Zones. Many of the grizzly bear reports around Three Sisters have been from a single young collared sub adult bear. It is the time of year when elk are having their calves. This is also when bears exhibit more predatory type behaviour due to the opportunities available to them for preying on young immobile elk calves. With this in mind – be extra cautious around cow elk because, like female bears with cubs, they can act aggressively in defence of their young.
