Bear Activity: June 21 to June 27, 2013

Due to the recent rain and tragic flooding events in the Bow Valley, there was no weekly bear summary for the previous week. Bear activity reports for this past week have been very few likely as a result of a much lower presence of people out hiking and recreating due to the ongoing flooding issues and need to attend to more urgent matters. The only reports received was for a black bear in the Yamnuska Zone and a reported grizzly bear in the Canmore Nordic Centre Zone. With the improving weather and long weekend coming up, it is expected that more people will be out and about and reports of bear activity will increase. As a reminder, maps indicating the zone locations referenced in these bear summary reports can be viewed via the link of this page to the right: www.wildsmart.ca/news/zones-reference-maps/

Of special note, there was a report of a cougar near the Stewart Creek golf course.

Bear Activity: June 7 to June 13, 2013

Black bear activity was reported this week at the Canmore Nordic Center Zone (multple reports), YMCA Zone, TSR South Zone, Quarry/Grassi Lakes Zone, Cougar Ck/Eagle terrace Zone, Gap Hill Zone, and the Yamnuska Zone. Grizzly bear activity in the valley was reported in the Canmore Nordic Centre Zone, Quarry/Grassi Lake Zone and Bow Valley Provincial Park Zone. As a reminder, maps indicating the zone locations referenced in these bear summary reports can be viewed via the link of this page to the right: www.wildsmart.ca/news/zones-reference-maps/

Of special note, there was a report of an aggressive elk that chased an individual with dogs in the North Canmore Zone in the vicinity of Lions Park. Elk are calving at this time and can become quite aggressive in the protection of their calves. Please keep dogs on leashes.
